Care, rehabilitation and hope for Ingrid Mostert.
Ingrid Mostert is our daughter, sister, godmother, mentor, colleague and friend. On 11 October 2020, ten days after submitting her PhD thesis, Ingrid was involved in a car accident, which resulted in a serious head injury.
She is now in East London in the Eastern Cape, after spending seven months at a rehab unit in Hillcrest, KZN. She is aware of people around her and is responding to family members, friends and therapists.
Ingrid's journey of healing will be a long one. Most of her hospital and rehab expenses to date have been covered by her medical aid. Now that Ingrid has been discharged from hospital she still needs additional rehab and care for an extended period of time. Some of these costs are not covered by medical aid and we are therefore raising funds to cover these costs.
At this stage we can't be sure what all the expenses will be. So far the funds raised have been used for medical fees not covered by medical aid, carers, legal expenses, travel costs between East London and Durban for us to be near Ingrid, as well as alterations to make her parents' home wheelchair accessible.

Ingrid's adventurous spirit and easy ability to connect with people from all walks of life have created a trail of connections across continents, winding roads, and village paths. She is an exceptionally good listener, has a compassionate heart, and a knack for meeting life's challenges and detours with tenacity, grace and humour.
Her attention to detail and calm acceptance of life's complexities are seen in everything from tending a stubborn vegetable garden to navigating education politics. Her success in her chosen career is matched by her humility and steady groundedness.
Ingrid has been involved in mathematics education since 2004, specialising in Foundation Phase Maths Education. Since 2016 she has worked part-time for Axium Education, and has also worked with Kelello and the Nelson Mandela Institute.
Ingrid's PhD is a culmination of her love of mathematics, her interest in languages other than English, and her discomfort with the inequality between the privileged and mainstream systems in South African schools.
She set out to produce work that is accountable to teachers in rural classrooms where mathematics is taught in isiXhosa. To do so, she spent four years living in Zithulele, visiting schools, working with teachers and helping a network of Nobalisa storytellers to extend their focus on literacy to include maths in their after-school programme.
